Habeeb, you are absolutely right.<br><br>I like to add my $0.02<br><br>$0.01) You don't have to teach philosophy. Its boring and practically useless for beginners. They will learn it as they use free s/w.<br>$0.02) If you ask RMS about Linux, he will ask you to use Gobuntu. But in my opinion, using some proprietary software is not wrong. I would prefer a proprietary s/w which *works* instead of a free s/w which doesnt work. The ultimate aim should be to improve the usability and friendliness of the system and to learn about the system. One day if you find that this "xyz" proprietary s/w is harmful, you can remove it.<br>

techies / gurus / engg. students?? what abt the common people? they<br>
are not our target? in my opinion, if we want them to listen to us,<br>
first we have to encourage them to use linux or other oss (where FS<br>
philosophy has been practically implemented).<br>

here is my xperience in the UAE. I did several installations for<br>
people who got impressed with linux seeing it on my laptop, with the<br>
intention of taking my part in this movement. BUT UNFORTUNATELY<br>
MAJORITY OF THEM CAME BACK TO ME TO GET THE LINUX REMOVED FROM THEIR<br>
PCs when I WAS UNABLE TO ANSWER THIER QUERIES OR RESOLVE THE ISSUES<br>
THEY FACED. With my limited knowledge (i'm just an<br>
intermediate/slightly advanced user) i was unable to support them, so<br>
i had no other choice but help them to remove.<br>

I learned a lesson from this. I cannot make people long-term linux<br>
users just showing them linux gui with compiz fusion and all, i have<br>
to transfer the knowledge and give support. I always feel sorry coz i<br>
could not do that.<br>

My point is, if we are committed to spread Linux and philosophy of<br>
Free Software and want to encourage people to use Linux, we have to be<br>
more supportive when people with limited or no knowledge of Linux come<br>
up with questions. this support is to be given in the area where they<br>
are interested. if a new user asks me "my linux box plays videos with<br>
low quality. then what is the advantage of using linux over windows?"<br>
i should not answer him "but your license allows you to modify and<br>
redistribute your linux" or something in that level.<br>
