I am attending Cochin ilug meet after two years and am happy to see very good attendance, peoples interest in gnu/linux .But one thing i have noted that the number of gnu /linux users other than developers is not increasing, there was only two or three people in 32 attendees who are desktop gnu/linux users or home users . since these type of people (non devolopers ) constitue the majority of computer users, We have to plan some thing to increse the awreness and penitration of gnu in general users .
like a camp for paretnts of school students who uses it@school. many of them finds gnu/linux difficult to install on thir home system . and training for teachers (some of them propagates its very difficult to use ).

The Meeting for the month of July (27/07/2008) was conducted successfully.
This time also we had a great turnout, with lot of people braving the
climate to
attend the meeting. The were "32" people from far off places who
attended the meeting,

Some brief snapshots from the meeting.

Date: 27-07-2008
Time: 2pm - 5.30pm
Venue: Internet Club, IInd <javascript:;> Floor, AMI Trust Building,
Broadway Enclave, Broadway, Ernakulam
Attendance : 32

The meeting started a bit late waiting for people to arrive. There was
the customary introduction,
after which the moderator talked about Free Software ,the GNU Movement,
Open Source Software and
Licenses. There was a discussion on the aspects of the Open Source
Software. There was also a
small introduction to the Affero GPL and LGPL. The concept of Zero
Knowledge was also discussed.

GnewSense <javascript:;> GNU/Linux Installation

The discussion moved onto the agenda for the day, with the speaker
giving an introduction to the
Gnewsense distribution and how it was different from Ubuntu. The
Installation session started by
explaining the prerequisites. The speaker talked about some important
things that need to be taken
care before installation (eg : like checking the media etc ..). Since
GNU/Linux distributions provide
very easy Installation programs especially with a live cd, the
explanations were satisfactory.
And also considering the fact that there were only 5 people who hadnt
installed GNU/Linux before.

There were questions ranging from how a live cd works to hibernation
requirements. Partitioning
was one area were there were questions from many of the attendees.

The Installation was wound up by 4pm.

After the discussions the audience moved on to have tea and snacks.
In fact the break was one point the meeting became alive.
After tea the audience moved on to attend the technical presentation of
the day.

Basics of Content Management Systems by Kurian

A brief introduction on the concept of the Content Management System was
given in the beginning followed by a
small overview on how WWW works and also how a CMS behaves on the
internet was also discussed.
The audience provided several inputs and the discussion was build on top
of those ideas.

Then session moved on to the Installation of Mambo. The following
relevant sections were presented:
- Instructions on installing the main components - Apache, PHP and MySQL
<javascript:;> were provided.
- Configuring Apache, creating and granting permissions for MySQL
<javascript:;> user for Mambo etc ..
- Mambo was installed using web interface and the site was hosted locally.
- A small content was created then and was posted and published in the
site.
- Types of users in Mambo, their roles, importance of Sections,
Categories and Menus were discussed .

Audience were mainly focused on the versatile scope of a CMS. Finally
the links for documentation and the forum that is maintained by the
Mambo Foundation were shared.

The App of the Month (Nautilus) by Sreenadh was cancelled in order to
wind up the meeting earlier. It was basically to avoid
inconvenience to the attendees because of the serious security situation
in the city.

Finally it was time for winding up for the day, and everyone assembled
for the
concluding session. Few Firefox Stickers given by Mr Mathew Chacko and some
low quality tiny GNU Stickers were distributed, the audience were asked to
put their feedback into the ML.

The meeting wound up at 5.30pm with the recitation of the national anthem.

We thank all the attendees for coming and request all to put in their
feedback
for the meeting on the Mailing List or my email so we can improve future
meetings.

Thanks to
Sreenadh for his earnest efforts in organizing the meeting.
(including the GNU Stickers)
Kurian for the technical presentation.
Madhu for the wonderful meeting photos.
