Sreenadh,
I had installed various audio programs, just for a test ride. I uninstalled
them one by one. After un installing gmerlin and lmms, vlc start working.
Still, amarok wasn't. Then I went to un-install kmix, dragonplayer, kscd,
mplayer, live media, gpac, jack audio connection kit, fluidsynth etc. Even
after this uninstallations were completed, amarok wasn't working. So I
stopped and restarted ALSA and did the same with firefox after which every
bit of audio and video in various formats began working with amarok and/or
vlc espect ogg file in CD. Streaming radio was working and even ogg from web
was playing. So I installed vorbis-tools and ogg in CD too started working.
Now the only problem left is, I cannot play the test sound in ALSA.
from user prompt:
$ sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
> ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1010:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
> aplay: main:608: audio open error: Device or resource busy
>
from root cosole:
# aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
> ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1010:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
> aplay: main:608: audio open error: Device or resource busy

So I did install lsof. The output of lsof | grep /dev/dsp is as follows:
$ sudo lsof | grep /dev/dsp
> firefox 4776 sebinaj 79w CHR 14,3 0t0
> 5573 /dev/dsp

As you can see, the only program currently accessing sound card is firefox.
Is it that, I should kill firefox in order to play analog sound in console?
As I am able to hear music, this might not be a priority. But still I am
eager about what happened to alsa.
thanks,
Sebin
