After the LUG meeting, I suggested that it could be either because you 'udated' Gutsy to Hardy, instead of a clean, fresh installation.
Some guys at the Ubuntu forums also experience the same problems, I guess IPW 3945 module is removed from Hardy. You can try enabling the backports repo.

My best guess is that, they're replacing ipw3945 module with iw3945. But your old modules from Gutsy is being loaded instead, which the kernel doesn't have any support.

Either you wait till the Ubuntu folks enable IPW3945 work around, or try and get IW3945 working.
Or better, get the module from backports repo.
