hashir,i think the reason why you are not getting the login is the one u mentioned, the corrupted installation of gnome.it may destroyed your /bin/login.so login to your system using ssh and try                        emerge shadow,ignore the errors and go on until it emerges,then i think u can login from your system itself.Before that you can check your system log in nano -w /var/log/messages.Hope this will help u

Thank you sir. But gnome was not installed. There were
some error and the installation aborted halfway. I was
trying to install xorg first.i had given the foll
command:

emerge -DuN x11-base/xorg-x11

Installation was not complete but was aborted someway
in between .

I replaced the /etc folder from an another working
machine. Still the problem persist.

Is there anything else i should be doing?
